It only takes one flick through a fashion magazine and you’re bombarded with information on the latest trends and how to wear them. Whilst trends can be a great way to have some fun with your wardrobe, it can sometimes be hard to distinguish between your own personal style and what everybody else is wearing. If you’re going through a fashion slump and need some direction (don’t we all from time to time!), here are a few quick and simple tips on how to express your own personal style…

Get Inspired
Whether you’re giving your home a makeover or your wardrobe an update, the best place to start is always by seeking some inspiration. Think about which celebrities or bloggers you follow online for their style posts, and create a Pinterest board featuring some of your favourite looks. Obviously you won’t want to copy another person’s style completely, but getting an idea of the look you’re aiming for is a great starting point and can help you make some key purchases.
Having a Pinterest board (or even just a few photos saved to your phone’s camera roll) is such an easy way to grab some inspo when you’re getting dressed in the morning, or wandering around the shops. I’m forever on Instagram when having an online shopping spree too!

Have A Clear Out
This is something I have talked about on YouTube a LOT! Is there any better feeling than having a good old clear out of your wardrobe?
Take a look at your wardrobe and chances are you’ll see items of clothing that haven’t been worn in years. If you want to develop a definitive style of your own, there’s no room for a Christmas jumper from 2012 or that pair of denim hot pants that you “might wear one day”. If you haven’t worn something in forever, the chances you’ll do so anytime soon are slim. Be ruthless in sorting your clothing into piles of what you’ll keep, sell and donate to charity. You might find that you can make a fair bit of money from your sales, leaving you with some extra cash to invest in new pieces.
Trust Your Instincts
So you’ve heard maxi skirts are on-trend, but feel like they do nothing for you? Or you’ve tried wearing bright colours, but feel most comfortable dressed in black? Go with your instincts when it comes to style and only wear what you feel confident in. Trying a new look out is fine, but ultimately the only way your style can be truly ‘personal’ is if it’s true to yourself!
I know it’s so tempting to give every trend a whirl, but that’s the beauty of changing rooms (and free online returns…). Only buy or keep a piece of clothing if you LOVE it – liking something isn’t enough when it comes to your precious wardrobe space!

Stop The Impulse Buys
And on that note…now that you’ve left yourself some space in your wardrobe, you’ll have room for some new key pieces that reflect your individual style. Make sure not to rush into buying the first cheap item you see, and think about the quality of the item and whether it’s versatile enough to be worn often.
Before going shopping, make a list of what items you need, what kind of style you’re hoping to achieve and what items you already have a wardrobe chock-full of. You’ll find that once you buy fewer items, you can afford to spend more on higher quality clothing that will last you years to come. But don’t panic – you don’t need to spend a fortune on your new items if you’re short on cash, however, as many brands such as Bellfield clothing offer stylish, high quality pieces at affordable prices.
I hope this has been helpful! I’d love to hear your own tips for developing your personal style too.
